STS Dagarna 2022

From SweSTS

Welcome to the Swedish STS conference 2022: 4-5 May in Gothenburg[edit]

The STS conference is the Swedish meeting place for Science & Technology Studies in Sweden. The purpose of the STS conference is to create a meeting place for researchers who are interested in issues related to technology and science in society. The conference is especially aimed at doctoral students and early stage researchers.

Science and Technology Studies (STS), is an interdisciplinary research area that has long attracted researchers from widely differing fields in both the social sciences and humanities: including sociology, anthropology, the historical sciences, business administration, philosophy, media and communication studies, design and organizational studies.

Theme expertise, knowledge production and politics[edit]

The theme of the conference is expertise, knowledge production and politics. STS has had a long standing engagement with expertise and knowledge production in society. Today, the role of the expert in society is highly relevant due to the increasingly public role that science has gained in the national and global arena. For instance, the climate crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic have made the question of experts in society crucial to attend to.

Common to the STS field's understanding of the expert in society is a desire to understand science and technology as intertwined with values, power, politics and normativity. STS has approached expertise in terms of uncertainty troughs, public understandings of science, research communication, skepticism towards science, citizen science, amateur science, sensing, and infrastructures.

What questions about expertise and knowledge production are raised when the number of experts, knowledge infrastructures and sensors are multiplied? How are conflicts and controversies handled? What norms are enacted through different infrastructures and sensors? In what ways are experts challenged by lay people - and what needs and questions are answered through popular movements and forms of activism? What are the tensions and problems?
